Panasonic’s Lumix camera division announced the new Leica 9mm f/1.7 MFT lens. I’ve not used this lens, nor have I seen it, but the write-ups and videos reviews are enticing.
My current favorite wide angle is the Leica 8-18mm zoom, and I don’t see that changing. But having a super wide angle with such a fast aperture, the new Leica 9mm f/1.7 MFT lens, is just one more optic to add to the already HUGE array of options Micro Four Thirds shooters are blessed with.
Micro Four Thirds keeps moving forward
I’m grateful that we continue to see new developments like the new Leica 9mm f/1.7 MFT lens in the Micro Four Thirds category of cameras. With the release of the Lumix GH6 and especially the Olympus OM-1, we now have two incredibly capable, small, lightweight tools that won’t break the bank. As I’ve mentioned many times, Micro Four Thirds is simply an extension of what we all know about electronics. And that is… all electronics get smaller, faster, and cheaper. This is why I believe MFT has a long-term advantage over the full-frame gear.
Sony confirms market for smaller camera gear
Although Sony doesn’t play in the world of Micro Four Thirds cameras, they do have their own version of smaller cameras, like the A6400 that use the APS-C size sensor. Similar to Micro Four Thirds, the APS-C sensor allows smaller lenses to be built for the system.
Though APS-C does allow for smaller lenses, they still aren’t as small as Micro Four Thirds lenses. But… for Sony to continue their support of the APS-C cameras suggests they feel the pressure from people who don’t want or need the expensive and heavy full-frame cameras. Below are the three new lenses they just announced. They are:
- 11mm f/1.8 (17mm in full-frame equivalent terms)
- 15mm f/1.4 (22mm in full-frame equivalent terms)
- 10-20mm f/4.0 (15-30mm in full-frame equivalent terms)
I’m tempted. This looks like a beautiful lens. Could be a great option for night skies.
