I’m now a Mac Power user having learned many tricks and tips since my first introduction to the Apple ecosystem in 2003. Prior to that, I’d been using PC’s since 1981. My first PC was an Epson Equity 1 and I used it for word processing as well as producing contracts I sent to editors with my pictures. As digital arrived it came to me in the form of a Nikon Coolscan 5000. It was a dream to be able to scan my original 35mm slides and make submissions via the internet. The date was 1996 and at that time Apple was on the verge of going bankrupt.
In those early days of working with digital images, I researched the pros and cons of using Apple. I had heard it was what virtually all editors were using. Mac was the machine for anyone producing creative work. That being the case I was tempted to switch to Apple. But the fact they were on the verge of disappearing made me nervous. I finally decided the risk was too great and so I continued using Windows machines.
Then in 2004, Rick Kasnof of Digital Railroad contacted me. Digital Railroad wanted to do a project together but it required me to use Apple computers. As part of the deal they offered me a Mac Pro desktop and a MacBook Pro laptop. It was not love at first sight and infact I fought the learning curve for almost three weeks. Eventually I saw the light and I’ve never looked back. Rick was a Mac Power user and I’m incredibly grateful for his guidance down the Apple highway. Thankfully my experience with Apple was much better and more productive than what I experienced with Digital Railroad. They shuttered the entire startup in 2008.
Switching computer systems was not easy. Even though Apple would like us to think they have the easiest operating system in the world, it’s not as intuitive as many people think. Lots of Apple zealots regularly preach the Mac’s OS superior ease of use. And longterm it is. But the initial switch is just like everything else. There’s a learning curve.
So for those who’ve just joined the Apple ecosystem or even those who’ve enjoyed using Macs for sometime this blog post on 9 to 5 Mac is full of great tricks and tips.
