Here is a question which I am sure a lot of wildlife photographers would like your view on. What is a realistic ‘keeper’ rate in % terms of a wildlife photography session you would expect to achieve?
Louis, sorry for the extremely late reply. This part of the Blog is tough to keep up with.
Regarding a “realistic keeper rate”? That’s a difficult question to answer. But in general, if I have a four-day shoot and collect 4000 images, I would be surprised if I find more than 6-12 I really think are worth keeping. That’s not to say the others aren’t good, they most likely just aren’t special. They may actually be good enough for most people but with the glut of images on the market, an image needs that extra something to be interesting to the editors I work with today. Like everything in today’s world, the competition is fierce and we’ve virtually seen it all. That makes keepers even more rare than at any time in history.
